Sgraffito and Mishima Pottery

What is Sgraffito?

Sgraffito is a decorative technique in which a layer of color is applied to a leather-hard (unfired) piece of pottery and then the design scratched in using a small stylus and loop tool. The piece is then fired to about 1800 degrees, glazed with a clear glaze, and fired again.

What is Mishima?

Mishima is the opposite sgraffito: a design is scratched into the leather-hard piece and then the lines are filled with color. Additional color is added to finish the design. The piece is then fired to about 1800 degrees, glazed with a clear glaze, and fired again.
